Reading the sidewall
A typical passenger size looks like 195/60R15 88H. Here is what each part means:
- 195 — tread width in millimetres.
- 60 — aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of width).
- R15 — radial construction; 15 is rim diameter in inches.
- 88 — load index (weight capacity code).
- H — speed rating.
Sometimes you will see extra letters after the rim size, such as C (commercial) or LT (light truck). Your vehicle placard should say if you need these types.
Tyre placard (manufacturer recommendation)
Since 1973, Australian vehicles have been supplied with a tyre placard showing approved wheel and tyre combinations, load, speed rating and recommended cold inflation pressures. It is often on the driver’s door pillar, in the glovebox or in the engine bay.
The placard size might look like 215/60R16 95V. If the size on your current tyres does not match the placard, a previous owner may have changed wheels or tyres — double-check before you order.
