Your Tyre Speed Rating Explained

The speed symbol on your sidewall (e.g. H, V, W, Y) indicates the tyre was validated for sustained operation up to that speed under controlled test conditions — with correct load and inflation.

Common symbols

T 190 km/h, H 210, V 240, W 270, Y 300 — with variants above Y for ZR-rated fitments. Your placard ties these to the vehicle’s top speed capability.

Can I downgrade?

Generally no for road registration and insurance peace of mind unless an engineer approves a change. Higher ratings often use stronger construction — useful even if you never reach the number.

Winter and all-terrain notes

Some aggressive patterns use Q or R ratings; that is normal for traction-first designs, not a defect.
